Schubertiade in Schwarzenberg

A festival for Franz Schubert. The first Schubertiade was organised in the year 1976 by a certain Hermann Prey in Hohenems, with an eye to restoring Franz Schubert to his rightful place alongside Mozart and Beethoven. Very quickly this Austrian town in Vorarlberg developed into a leading festival destination and a popular rendez-vous for international audiences. Keen to meet top-class musicians in a venue of manageable size, these audiences also appreciated the fact that, instead of offering a programme open to arbitrary variation, this festival had clearly defined parameters: an uncompromising dedication to the music of Franz Schubert.
